How to Steal a Job from a Czech

Occasionally I come across articles like "we don't want foreigners here" and "foreigners steal our jobs". I know that it's all mostly for fun and nobody takes it seriously anymore. But I think it would be good if everyone knew how long the job theft process takes from the other side's point of view, that is, us foreigners.

Imagine you're Russian, Ukrainian or god forbid Belarusian, and you've decided to go work in Czechia. Your steps?

Believe it or not, the first step is exactly the same for everyone - find demand according to your experience and needs. And it's quite possible that you don't have much of that experience. And it's quite possible that nobody will even answer you. So if you're Czech and want to simply steal a job the way we do - I have the first lifehack for you - send a resume that says you're not from the EU. You'll immediately get ten times more responses.

So we got a formal "yes", and now the second step. The employer must send a notice to the Labor Office that they intend to employ a foreigner. But the office must publish this position for at least 30 days. This is done because the law allows employment of foreigners only if nobody from the locals responded to this position. So yes, the second barrier - you'll steal the job only if someone else isn't trying for this theft.

We're closer to our treasure. Now of course we need a visa for entry. That's relatively simple. After 30 days of notice we can sign a contract tied exactly to this position. We book time at the Czech embassy. What, waiting time at least 1-2 months? We can handle that :)

When we've submitted all the necessary documents and visa application, we just have to wait for a positive response. This is just a trifle - 1-6 months. But yes, sometimes it happens that you get a negative answer, so the whole process again.

And I hope it's clear to you that during those few months your employer is calmly waiting and not looking for anyone else.

Well, congratulations, you can start working at your freshly stolen place :) Just one note: you have a work permit only for this position, so if you happened to want to change jobs, start the whole process again. And yes, if you have a lease in Czechia for another six months or a contract with some O2 for 10 years, that's fine - as soon as the contract ends, you have to go back.

I hope you won't take all this seriously, but I hope I'll reduce some smartasses' belief that foreigners have it too good here :) Unfortunately this process isn't completely ideal. And when your buddy whines again that there are too many Russians, migrants and Muslims here, send him this article.
