Poel

September 2026

This trip was undertaken as part of a holiday trip around Italy hastily planned expedition through northern Germany with the aim of finding out what they’re like over there when it comes to beer and fish:
WismarPoelLübeckSchwerin

I’ll say straight away, I’ve no idea how to pronounce it (Poël? Poyöl? Poel? Pöl?), I’ve gone for the French-style pronunciation. It’s an island that’s, in a way, really chilled out. There’s a bus that goes there, but unlike in the north of France, it runs almost every hour (though it costs a fair bit too)

20 minutes, and you’re there

They even sell cigarettes from vending machines here (I’ve always found that hilarious, but in Berlin, apparently, they’ve even started selling art from these machines)

In keeping with an old German tradition, there’s not a soul in the city

You can really tell what a godforsaken place this is

We hired some bikes for 9 euros a day, but we have to return them by 5 pm

All in all, very comfortable; you don’t even need electric bikes

The scenery is chilled out

A stop for a breather

Fishbrötchen – that’s what I was most looking forward to. They lived up to my expectations; they were delicious. I hope that one day the bread will be a bit better

Another funny bit: we popped in for a beer. Vovan’s like – they actually asked us, "Prego"? Well, we thought, it’s obvious we’re Italians. It turned out that absolutely everyone there speaks just Italian. Hardly any German at all. How on earth that came about and why, history is silent on the matter

For me, these little huts have become the symbol of the island

I love these little quirks in the middle of nowhere

Knockin' on Heavens' door (should re-watch)

There are also roofs here made of a cool material, sort of like straw – I’ve never seen anything like it

Another one, with salmon (nothing special – I’d recommend local fish instead). And another funny thing – draught beer is virtually non-existent in this part of Germany

TECHNOLOGIA. Return ticket – the driver writes on it by hand when you return, so you can’t use the ticket twice

A great day – I’ve had a proper chill
